Special Holidays

National Eat Your Vegetables Day..June 17

This holiday falls in the middle of National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month!  It is time to remind everyone to continue with this part of a healthy diet.

You can add veggies to your breakfast.  Swap out that muffin for a smoothie, skip that candy bar for some carrots, or how about veggie chips for a change?  Say no to the French fries and go with a side salad instead.  Try it!!

Ugliest Dog Day  June 20

Ugliest Dog Day celebrates the pups out there with a face only a mother could love.  But when it comes to man’s best friend, is there really a dog that can’t be considered adorable?  No matter how they look the antics of animals will always be cute.  A “World’s Ugliest Dog Contest” is an annual contest held in Petaluma as part of the Sonoma Marin Fair.  Past winners include Scamp the Tramp, Zsa Zsa, Quasi Modo, Peanut and Mugly.  So no matter how unphotogenic your dog is, celebrate that mut’s mug and strut him around and be proud today and everyday!

World Croc Day  June 17

That is…”Croc” for Crocodile. What’s the difference between crocodiles and alligators you may ask!  The main difference is their snout.  The crocodile’s snout forms into a long pointed V-shape.  An alligator’s is more U-shaped and rounded. Another difference is their weight.  Alligators weigh about 500 pounds and crocodiles can reach up to 2,200 pounds.  They are much more aggressive and dangerous than alligators.

There are only two countries on earth that have alligators…China and the United States.  American alligators live mostly from North Carolina to Florida and on the Atlantic coast.  They are becoming extinct in China due to their food resources are contaminated by pesticides and fertilizers.

However, Crocodiles’ numbers are growing strong, they have increased 2.2 percent since 2018.  Not only are crocodiles bigger, stronger and more aggressive they can be found in nearly every corner of the world.

They were considered on the brink of extinction about 50 years ago as hunters were killing them for their skins.

Today we acknowledge this amazing creature!

Did you know?

*Crocodiles can go through 4,000 teeth in a lifetime.  Once they lose a tooth there is a small replacement already on standby.  They are able to replace each of their 80 teeth up to 50 times over their lifespan.

*They have the strongest bite of any animal in the world, 5,000 pounds of pressure per square inch.

*The longest crocodile captured alive (in this case by National Geographic team in the Philippines) measured over 20 feet and weighed 2,370 pounds.

Birthdays

Art Bell…..June 17, 1945 - 2018

Arthur William Bell III was an American broadcaster and author.  He was the founder and the original host of the paranormal themed radio program “Coast to Coast AM”.

He was born in North Carolina and was always interested in radio.  At the age of 13 he became a licensed amateur radio operator.  After leaving military service he worked as a disc jockey for a radio station in Okinawa, while there he set a Business World Record staying  on the air for 116 hours and 15 min. The money raised for this event allowed him to charter a plane to Vietnam and rescue 120 orphans stranded in Saigon and eventually brought to the US and adopted by American families.

After returning to the US he worked in cable television and began to host “Coast to Coast AM” with 460 stations.  He earned praise from those who felt the paranormal deserves a mature outlet as well as those simply amused by the nightly parade of bizarre and fringe topics.  Among those he interviewed were Dean Koontz, Chris Carter (X-Files), Leonard Nimoy, Dan Akroyd, Casey Kasem, physicist Michio Kaku, Willie Nelson, and George Carlin to name a few.

In 1997 a caller into the show claimed he had discovered an unknown threat and conspiracy from Area 51 and his life was in danger by even talking about it.  For unknown reasons Bell lost connection to his transmitter during the call and the alleged voice became more and more  agitated then the entire broadcast dramatically went silent, a confused Bell restored the signal about 20 minutes later.  It was mentioned on another show that the caller hoaxed the whole discussion…or did heIt had never been fully explained.

Bell was inducted into the Nevada Broadcaster Hall of Fame, the National Radio Hall of Fame and won the radio trade magazine “Radios and Records” Lifetime Achievement Award.

His first non-fiction book “Communion” was based on this alien abduction, and, it sold over 2 million copies.

He claimed that he was woken one night by a strange noise, and saw a small non-human entity approach his bed.  Suddenly it was morning and not only was he disoriented, but he felt aggressive.  During a session of regressive hypnosis a few months later, some of the memories returned of those “visitors”  abducting him.

The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms released on June 13,1953.  This film was directed by Eugene Lourie (The Colossus of New York, The Giant Behemoth, Gorgo).  Special effects were by Ray Harryhousen, and starring Kenneth Tobey, Paula Raymond, Vera Miles and Steve Brodie.

Trivia

*The Japanese film “Gojira” (Godzilla) was released a year later and has been said it’s producer Tomouki Tanaka was heavily influenced by “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms” (it’s original working title was Big Monster from 20,000 Fathoms).

*At 5 million dollars this was one of the highest grossing films of 1953.  The film’s original release prints were processed in sepia tone, some also had the underwater sequences tinted green.

*During the octopus/shark sequence some footage was filmed in an aquarium, as you can see the octopus gripping the glass.

*The rollercoaster shown towards the end of the film is the Cyclone Racer in The Pike Amusement Park in Long Beach, CA.  A miniature was burnt at the end of the movie.  It was one of the great old wooden coasters and cost 35 cents and one could ride it as many times as they like, just by paying the operator.

This Island Earth released on June 10, 1955.

This film was directed by Joseph M. Newman and Jack Arnold (The Incredible Shrinking Man, Tarantula, Creature of the Black Lagoon, It Came From Outer Space, Monster on Campus).  This film starred Rex Reason, Faith Domergue, and Jeff Morrow.

Trivia

*It took two years to complete the special effects.

*In 1957 it was shown along with “Invaders From Mars”.  In the summer of 1960 it was shown on a double bill with “Forbidden Planet”.

*The mutant costumes originally had legs that matched the upper body but they had trouble making it that way, so, the actors were just put into plain trousers along with the rest of the costume.  The promotional posters showed the matching legs.

*Actors Jeff Morrow and Rex Reason were so embarrassed by the look of those mutants (which they said resembled giant bugs) that they wanted to leave during the premiere.

*The costume that Faith Domergue wore in the space ship was so tight she couldn’t sit down, so, the crew built a slanted board for her to lean on when needed.

The 10th Dr. Who first appeared June 18, 2005. David Tennant was forced out of the Ninth Doctor in a big spurt of fire and continued as the 10th Dr. Who, and, made the show a colossal worldwide hit.  David managed to be charming, whimsical and riddled with glee one moment and then pained, old and angry the next.

So who is Dr. Who?  He is a centuries-old alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels (frequently with companions) in time and space in the TARDIS (a time machine and spacecraft resembling a British telephone booth) At the end of life the Doctor regenerates.. as a result the physical appearance and the personality   changes into the new actor playing the part. The first Dr. Who episode premiered in November, 1963.
