Famous People’s Birthdays:

  1. Soupy Sales 1926-2009
    1. Milton Supman
    2. American Comedian, Actor, radio & T.V. personality and Jazz Aficionado, Best known for his television show Lunch with Soupy Sales from 1953-1966. And a regular on: What’s My Line”.
      1. Pie in the face at the end of each show.
    3. In the navy he entertained his shipmates and playing characters over the ship’s public address system.
      1. Predating the MASH
    4. Earned a MASTERS degree in Journalism and performed in night clubs as a comedian and singer.
    5. Started as a script writer and radio disc jockey and then started his television career with Soupy’s Soda Shop in 1950!
      1. Televisions FIRST teen-dance program.
        1. Predating American Bandstand.
      2. The Children’s show, Lunch with Soupy Sales started later in 1953 and
      3. At about the same time, he had a late night show called Soups On where he had jazz musicians such as Colman Hawkins, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Billy Holliday and more, including Miles Davis who appeared 6 times.
      4. He was the guest host on the Tonight Show between Jack Parr and Johnny Carson.
      5. Frank Sentara was a fan of his signing him to 2 albums.
      6. Had two sons who themselves were musicians that were in a band with David Bowie called “Tin Machine”
      7. Honored at the Clifford Brown Symposium in 2008; presented with a medal and award for advancement and preservation of Jazz.
        1. Soupy had Brown on the Jazz show that produced the only known film of brown paying his trumpet. The only other place to see this was on Ken Burns Jazz documentary series.
      8. All of this time I was wondering how Milton became Soupy.
        1. His brothers already had nick names such as Ham Bone, Chicken Bone, so Milton was named Soup Bone. And the rest is history.
      9. David Bowie 1947-2016
        1. David Robert Jones
          1. Changed because of Davey Jones of the Monkeys.
        2. Became interested in music when his father brought home a collection of 45s of Fats Domino, The Platters, Little Richard and Elvis. He was most influenced by  Charles Mingus and John Coltrane
        3. His first band at 15 was called The Konrad’s where Bowie played the Sousaphone and then the Lead singer.
        4. He is considered the most influential musician of the 20th century with 6 bands, 140 million albums sold; earned 49 awards and >100 nominations.
        5. Also acted in > 35 films.

    1. The Theoretical Physicist and author who defied the odds to become one of the most famous scientists in history.
    2. Winner of over 20 prestigious awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
      1. When President Obama gave that to him the president said: “From his wheel chair he has let us on a journey to the farthest and strangest reaches of the cosmos.  In so doing, he has stirred our imagination and has showed us the power the human spirt here on Earth.” 
    3. Hawking’s disease (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) had been considered a death sentence and instead lived an additional 55 years.
      1. Yet another example of a great human spirit.
